- Murtagh's Distillery in Water St. existed for some 150 years but closed down about 1857. The present chimney stack, which is now used by the Gas Co., belonged to it. The Murtagh's took an active part in the Martin and Greville election in this County and that finished them. It was taken over by the North City Dublin and they ground Flour, Meat etc. for about 15 year's but foreign competition got the better of them about the year 1818. It is now owned by Messrs. Fox. About the year 1872 there was a Spool Factory on the Market Square. This gave considerable employment; but it was said shortage of timber around the town, compelled them to close down. The house now occupied by Mrs. Gill was the manager's residence. The was a tanyard in Bridge St. known as Gray's Tanyard. It was there for about 180 years and employed a great number of men (that was about 44 years ago). The buisness closed down owing to importation.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
