- In spring the flax was sown in this district. When ripe, men and women pulled it. Then it was carted away and "drowned" in water. The hole it was put in was called a flax-hole. When the shoves got rotten the flax was lifted out of the water. It was carted to a field to dry. It was lifted when dry and made into stooks. It was stacked and thatched. In winter it was brought in, dried, beetled and scutched. It was carded, hackled and spun into linen thread. Then it was brought to the weaver to be woven into linen which made sheets, pillow cases, table linen, towels, napkins, shirts, and collars. They were very hard washed and coarse.
