- Hedges schools were very common years ago. Old people say that schools were taught in barns and out in the open air. A hedge school was taught in a field of Willie Leary's in the townland of Fyhora and it continued there for up to eight years. The teachers' names were Miss King and Mrs Mc Guire. Both teachers came from Dublin. English was the principle taught in these schools. Irish was not taught by either teachers or spoken by the pupils. The writing was done on slates. The pupils were seated on blocks and bits of wood. They used no blackboards either. They old people say that these schools were very uncomfortable.
