  1. About one hundred years ago there was a Hedge School in Legga. The school was in the open air behind Johnny Murphy's hedge. The teacher was known as the "Poor Scholar". He was a stranger. His name was Mr Madigan. On a wet day he was allowed to teach in a barn. All the pay he got was twopence a week from each scholar. He went home with the scholars on turn to lodge that night. One of the books the pupils studied was "The Universal" which was a spelling book.
    The Junior classes wrote on slates and the senior classes wrote with quills on paper. Instead of blackboards the teacher used big
