   Long ago there used to be a great many poor people travelling about from house to house looking for help. They used to gather potatoes, bread, eggs, and a great many other things.

   At night they used to get lodgings in the houses. They used to be let sleep along the fire on a bag or in the barn. The old people used to like to keep those poor people at night and hear them telling stories and news.

   But nowadays the travelling people have tents and vans in which they sleep at night.

   There are other kind of people called tinkers who go around selling tins. Those are called tin-smiths. Some of them clean chimneys and are called sweeps. The sweeps are very black in colour. They also sell brushes, mats, carpets and artificial
