- Forts mark the places in which houses were situated long ago. There were mounds on earth built round these houses to protect the people from their enimies and from wild beasts. These mounds of earth were called forts or lioses.
If an important person lived in one of these houses there would be these houses there would be two or three walls built round where he lived. There are three forts in this district one in Pulladoey and two in Clenrath.
Clenrath or Claonraic means the sloping fort because there is a fort in that townland and it is built on the side of a sloping hill. Some people believe that the fairies or 'good people' live in these forts.
