- Long ago people used no wax candles but they made their own candles out of rushes. They cut the rushes first. They brought them home and peeled the skin off them. They left on strip of the skin to keep the inside together. They then got unsalted butter or lard melted it and soaked the rushes in it. When they were well soaked they hung them in bundles to dry and firm. They are then put into wooden candlesticks. There was a screw on this candlestick which kept the candle pushed up until the candle was burned. The old people always used rush candles.
