- The houses which existed in former times were mud wall houses.
The roofs was of thatch. The thatch was of straw or sometimes rushes.
The old houses usually had a settle-bed in the kitchen placed at the wall. The chimneys were made of clay and wattles commonly called "cat and clay".
Every house had half-doors in former times and there are some of them yet. They used turf for the fire.
