- Long ago houses were built low. There were no chimneys on them but a hole in the roof to let out the smoke with a "gallon" or a box on the top of the cabin. In a very odd house there was a window with four panes of glass but one pane so that no robber could get in for oaten meal.
For the door there was a round hole in which was a whin bush pulled in and bound there. There were no stools or chairs but a stone to sit on.
