- The houses of long ago were small. They were built out of sods, and blue clay and the foundations were made out of stones. There was no glass in the windows but a hole in the wall. The fire place was at the gable wall. The arch was built out of sticks and set in blue clay. There was a room and kitchen in the house. The floor was a clay one. In one corner of the kitchen there was a settle bed. There is manny little houses. The light the old people used was rush candles or a little lamp made out of tin with a little wick in it. The people had a piece of board sticking out of the wall and the lamp was left lit on it. The houses were thatched with straw or rushes.
