- The great Bishop Higgins who laid the foundation stone of St. Mels Cathedral in Longford. He lived with his uncle Peter Cooney of Breenrisk from whose house he went to a Latin scool in Moyne taught by one Larry Duffy. He was afterwards educated in Paris where he met old friends from Barragh when the British army entered Paris after waterloo. When he was ordained in Rome he was called the bright star of Ireland. At his last interview with the Pope he reminded the Holy Father that the see of Ardagh was vacant and he was consecrated its Bishop and sent to Ireland. When he arrived home he found the parish priest at a meeting to elect a new Bishop and said to them that he would be a Candidate. They laughed at him and especially a priest named Father Redihan from the present Dromard parish.
