  1. About thirty-five or forty years ago Mrs Geelan of the townland of Bohey and parish of Gortlettern was alone in her home with two young children: one aged a year, and the other two and half years. Her other children had been at school and her husband had been at his work in the fields.
    It happened that she needed spring water, and what was she to do with the children whilst she should be away for the water.
    She put the two children to bed and sang them to sleep. She then hoped to be back with the water before they should awaken.
    She started and ran as much as she was able; but her fears for the children grew as her breathing went up. Besides imagining their falling out of the bed, and their desperation on finding themselves alone, she thought if the curious beggar that used to be seen now and again should call into the house.
    She then could think of nothing but the murder of the children by the half-mad beggar.
    In this state of mind she arrived at
