  1. In olden times, the people were very strong. Those were the days when there was no loaf or sweet bread. The bread which they ate was made from the corn which they grew on their own land. Wheat, barley, oats and rhy. The way they used to make the oaten bread was, they used to get a porringerful of oaten meal, and they used to put it on a board called a "lossed" and scarcely wet it. Then it was rolled with a roller and made into a small cake. Then they used to put it against a "griddle-stick" before the fire until it bacame hard and baked. Long ago the people were very fond of hunting out on the bogs and sometimes they took a weakness, which they called the fear-agortha, and they always took a piece of oaten cake with them, and when they ate a piece of it they
