- The oldest houses we know anything about were the mud-wall house and the house of bog sods. The mud-wall houses and the houses built of bog sods were considered very warm. They were built of stones and yellow clay was the mortar which they used. They roofed them with wattles and then they thatched them. Those houses used not to stand up long. When the yellow clay became dry it fell off from the wall. In the houses of long ago there used to be a rod or basket knitted chimney; they used to plaster it with yellow clay. Then they used to have a big crane-crook or a hanger up the chimney to hang up(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
