- I often saw my father making baskets. The man that makes them now is Pat Mulvihill. He lives in the townland of Newpark about a quarter of a mile from my house. When my father needs a basket he gets sally rods in the townland. He gets them in a field near the bog where years ago a man lived here whose name was Jonnie O'Connor. Then he brings the rods to the basket maker, he first gets one of the weak rods and makes a whoop of it. Then he twines the rest in and out until the basket is made. It reminds us of darning a stocking. When it is finished we would not know where it was begun.
Jonnie O'Connor was a great basket. He is now dead thirty years. He had a plentiful supply of rods and every Christmas he made presents to the neighbours of Baskets. Nearly all the old baskets makers are dinying out and none of the young generation are learning this trade?- Bailitheoir
