- Rush Candles. You would have to go to bottom land where thee would be strong rushes about two feet long . Cut them with a hook . Break off the thin tops and peel the rushes leaving two little strips of the green on to strengthen the rush . Then you put the sIosgAn of rushes on the sugar ( a frame of wooden sallies) to dry . You put down grease in a crust ( a boat shaped pot ) and melt it. Take a bundle of rushes and dip them in it .Then you put them into a candle trough to cool. Then you put them into a candlestick placed on the middle of the floor. This was a wooden article with a sort of pincers on top to hold the rush candle . On the top of the candlestick there was a snuffers. This was a small article like a thimble used for quenching and knocking off the inside part of the candle.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
