- Long ago the houses in this district were mostly thatched, about 150 of them were slated.
The thatch was got from the stalks of the grain crops which the people grew.
The old houses usually had a bed in the kitchen, and it was placed beside the fire and was called a settle-bed.
The fire was nearly always at the gable end of the house
The front of the chimney was made of stone and the chimneys in Athlone were noted for the ornamented designs that were on them.
Some of the old houses had no chimney or fire-place, they had the fire in the middle of the floor, and the smoke went through a hole in the roof that was made for that purpose.
Sometimes people had shutter in the windows instead of glass
The floors were made of hardened clay. Half-doors are common in(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
