- One of the best flute players that ever lived was Patrick Oates, who died thirty-six years ago. He was born in the shadow of the present Moyvoughley school. When he grew up, he was employed by Thomas Maher the local squire
It seems that Patrick Oates and another man were cleaning drains in Sally Curragh and a mad beggar man passed and asked who they were working for and the wages they got.
Patrick told him and he said that he would remedy that. Patrick came up that night to Thomas Flanagan and whispered to him that a man asked him what wages he had and he would remedy their poor lots.
