  2. In the Rathowen district Westmeath, many people believe that certain persons who wish ill luck to others, bury a sheaf of corn for them, repeating some malediction over it. According as the sheaf rots the victims pine away. If they wish to cause a painful death they put a pin in each joint of the straw - this causes extraordinary torture and suffering. If a person pines and dies without reason apparently it is said that "Somebody must have buried a sheaf for him
