  1. (continued from previous page)
The gates were locked, I came too late
    I had to go elsewhere
No sound disturbed the peaceful town
No noise of horse or car
I sough for refuge up and down
    In vain through Mullingar
    IV
I thought how wretched was my lot
    To houseless roam about,
But as I wandered I forgot
The peelers came and handcuffed me
And put me on a par
    With bold outlaw and rapparee
    That night in Mullingar.
    V
Before their worships I was brought
    Who looked severe and frowned.
"Out after sunset", there was nought
    Of crime against me found
And yet it was for this alone
    Inside of bolt and bar
They sent me for three months to groan
    In jail in Mullingar.
