The Colonel came at the head of the regiment with the key when Peter asked for it and putting it on the door-step at the Chapel with a brace of pistols asked the Colonel to select one, choose a seconder and measure his ground, saying that which ever of them survived would have control of the key of the Chapel. The Colonel without a word left with his man and shortly afterwards left Mullingar. The bell was never afterwards interfered with.
    Tradition tells us that it was from fear of the Fitzgeralds that Cromwell did not destroy Multy Convent.
