  1. Once upon a time there was a man and his wife living near a fort which was at the back of the house.
    One Hallow's Eve night the woman said to the man, "Ton, you ought out and look at the cow and calf.
    So he went out and looked at them and with that a little fairy came up and put Tom on his own calf's back, and told him not, on any account, to speak and that he would be left back home safe and sound again.
    They rode off over hedges and ditches and at last they came to a big river.
    Just as the calf was half-way across with a great jump Tom spoke and said, "Speak or not speak, that's the best leap ever I saw a bull calf doing", and with that Tom was left sitting in the middle of the river to try and get out the best way he could.
