- IndustriesTanning Some two centuries ago Tanning was a flourishing industry in Mullingar. As far back as 1736 - pelts were tanned in Mullingar tanneries - of which there were four. The Old Tannery. Site Bishop's Gate Street.
Extended along a lane now known as Presentation Convent Lane; to where present Legion Hall and and Shaw's Stores are situated. In 1741 - tannery was bought by a member of Dowdall family - now represented by T. J Dowdall, Esq, [B?]. (Hence name Dowdall's Tannery). A Mr. Tuite was manager for years. Hides or pelts used in tannery were bought from farmers of locality - every Tuesday - at Daly's Crossing, about 1 1/2 miles outside town in direction of L. Eunel.
One of the buyers was named Bailey.
