  1. Schools were taught by the most learned people of the district. In summer they were conducted in the open and in winter under poor shelter. The rule laid down for each pupil was a penny a week and a sod of turf in payment. They were scattered all over the country. I've been told that one stood where our garden now is. It was taught by Mary Geraghty a well known person in Mullingar about some twenty five years ago. My mother remembers her well, but she did not know her as hedge school mistress.
