In this locality people did not wear boots until they were twenty or twenty one years of age, and then they only wore them on Sundays going to mass.
There was a man in Middleton and he never wore boots. His name was Mr Mooney and he is in the Mental Hospital now. The boys of this area go barefooted in the summer, but they wear boots in the winter. It is the custom for people to wash their feet every Saturday night. It is said that if you were washing your feet, and if another person wanted to wash their feet as well, there would be a fight to see who would throw out the water. The people of this district wore clogs long ago but nowadays they do not wear them. Boots are not made in this district but they are repaired. There is one shoemaker in this district.
