  1. In olden times the best football team in the country was in Garthy.
On one occasion they challenged the men of Ballynacargy to a game of football. The Ballynacargy men were also noted footballers.
The contest took place in a field belonging to Mrs. Moran of Garthy. The men were dressed in their shirts and trousers and wore big nailed boots.
There were twenty-five men in each team. At forst the Ballynacargy men had the wind and they succeeded in scoring four points while the Garthy men scored only one point. But when they changed sides, the Garthy men scored six points, while the Ballynacargy men scored nothing.
