1. Swift Runners

   

   Roinn Roinn Postáil

   Long ago, there lived in this district
   a great many swift runners who proved
   themselves champions by racing very
   swift and by high jumping.
   One runner in particular and he
   proved himself a champion and his
   name was Patrick Glynn.
   He was challenged by a soldier in
   three events, a quarter mile, a half mile
   and a whole mile.
   The race was run in the Barrack Square
   in Mullingar, and the day it took place
   was St. Patricks day.
   The prize was to be a gold watch.
   Glynn won the race in record time and
   by doing so proved himself a champion,
   to all the people that witnessed the event.
   Here is part of the song that was composed
   about him after the race:- They came
   from Athlone and Bastlepollard roaming mad,
   Around by Mutyfarnaham and in through
   Kinnegad, When they laded on the Square,
   it was tis we heard them say,
   That Orange crown we will tear down,
   all on this Blessed Day, It was a beautiful
