  1. Lime Making.
Long ago the people in this district burned their own lime.
They built a small line kiln in the corner of a field.
Then they got lime stones and drew them near the lime kiln.
They got sledges and broke the large stones and they got hammers to break the small stones.
When there was sufficient stones broken.
They got some turf, coke and coal and arranged a layer of stones, then coal, and coke, and turf and soon until the kiln was full.
Then there was fire put in the arch under which was left.
The turf took fire and lit up through the stones, coke, and coal until the whole kiln was a burning mass.
This had to be stirred with a long iron or poker, after two days some lime could be got in the bottom, so the air could get through the other lime and it would burn better.
