  1. Christmas. Christmas is the greatest festival in the year. About a week before it, the woman of the house cleans the windows and polishes the furniture. The man of the house whitewashes or paints the house outside. He scuffles and brushes the avenue and yard. The boys and girls go to the nearest holly-bush and gather a bundle of holly. Off they go to the local wood for ivy and laurel. The house is decorated with holly, ivy, and laurel. On Christmas Eve one or two candles are put in each window to guide and welcome the passing strangers. A turkey is roasted for the Christmas dinner.
    St Stephen's Day. All the boys and girls dress in old clothes and go from house to house singing
