- A Local Craft9-2-38Long ago they used rush candles. It was an old man named John Reilly of Crossra who started to make them first at Lisnabrin near Mount Nugent.
Rush candles were made by pulling a bundle of good fat rushes and peeling them, leaving a stripe along the back. The rushes were then hung up to dry for a few days. When they were dry, they were soaked in melted grease. Then they were ready for use. They were put into candle sticks like pinchers.
They were in use about forty years ago. John used to work every day at making rush dandles. He died about thirty-eight years ago.Margaret Watson,
