Ireland can boast of many splendid poets both living and dead, and the County Meath is nearly in the forefront. As having produced some of its best. In and around Slane there have been several poets who are world famous. Francis Ledwidge and John Boyle O'Reilly. Both of whom are now dead but their works will live for ever.

Francis Ledwidge was born at Janeville just outside the village of Slane Co Meath in the year 1890. He came of poor parents his father being a labourer. From his early days Frank showed signs of his great talent as he seized on every opportunity to study nature in all her moods. He was educated in Slane N.S. after which he worked as a labourer.
It was about this time he wrote many poem including "Bound to the Mast" "The Ships of Arcady" "The Shadow People". After the 1 world war of 1914-1918 broke out he joined the English army and fought in the Balkans and in France being killed there in July 1915.
