    Even in dreams not quie Elpian when transported to that shore
    Where none came back ever more!

    In a deep recess 'twas sitting - showed no signs of flight or quitting;
    Such a visage - so unearthly - none but demons ever wore;
    "Heaven shield me from all danger! - guard me from that fiend-like stranger!"
    Thus I cried, while in a manger just behind the crazy door,
    Suddenly I heard a rustle - "Bless me, bless me, all is o'er"
    "Surely" said I, "here are more!"

    Than the hook-nosed, round-faced goblin that I shivering stood before -
    All my by-past sins and errors came renewed and dressed in terrors,
    And I scarcely hoped that mercy - tender mercy - was in store;
    For, that "conscience makes us cowards"
