There I heard a dismal groaning, a bewailing or bemoaning,
Such a weary mortals utter when the heart within is sore,
And I peer'd into that stable, but to fathom was unable
The dark doubts which then beset me of the voice within the door
Of that lone neglected out house, where I had not been before,

"Wretch!" I cried, or vile intruder, tell me how it is that you dare

Just ten perches, and no more.
But a sudden thought came flashing,
which constrained me then from dashing
