  1. The rushes were cut and tied in small bundles
They were left to dry and when dry the tops were taken off.
They were then peeled leaving a small margin of skin on each rush.
They were now drawn through a vessel of grease (hot).
The vessel called a grisset was made of iron in the shape of a boat but both ends alike and about two and a half inches deep in the centre and about one foot in length.
The rushes are now put in a box without top or ends and hung near the fire to dry, care being taken not to break them.
Tras-scríofa ag duine dár meitheal tras-scríbhneoirí deonacha.
  2. The resin was melted in the grisset. A cloth about three quarters of an inch in width and about one foot in length is held in one hand and the hot resin is wound round the cloth with a small piece of stick.
The candle is now laid on a chair
