    Cromwell's Assault thereon.
    Tradition says that when Cromwell's forces came to attack the castle of Ardamagh, they planted their cannon on a hill on the townland of Robertstown, known to Irish-speaking people as Bal-ná-mbodach and there commenced operations. For a long time their efforts were unsuccessful, as the castle was strongly built and exceptionally well fitted to stand all the assults that might be made upon it either from cannonading or otherwise. While the siege was going on, the owner of the castle whose name was Plunkett and who seems to have been an exceptionally good marksman took aim, and with one of the guns of the period shot the second officer in command of the besieging party. The assault was a failure till they found
