- Otter Island is an island in the Blackwater at the end of Pagoes Wood. The river flows rapidly at this point and one cannot get to the island. The story was got from a man many many years ago who in turn received from that clever old hedge school master Neil Gibney.The Danes were coming up the river to Donaghpatrick (which they burned in 994) and as they were passing the part of the river where the island now stands the last two boats which were a good distance behind the main body were attacked and were sunk in mid stream, and the crews killed and the body recovered and carried off by the Irish. The boats were held by a rock and a tree that was carried down by the flood joined the boats and so on through the years till an island was formed. It was called Inis Luinge and the name is still known by some. A gold ornament was here discovered by one of the Sugrue Family for which he got £90 from a Jew and with which money he was able to bring his family to America after the Gibstown Clearances.
