- Potatoes are grown on our farm. Daddy prepares the ground, by ploughing and harrowing it. Potatoes are grown both in ridges and in drills. When the ground is harrowed the drills are raised by a plough. A spade is used for making ridges in the garden.
There are no spades made locally but there are shovels made in this town. When planting the potatoes if they are large they are cut in the centre but there must be an eye in each part. When the potatoes come above the ground they are moulded. In Summer they are sprayed to keep away the slugs and to keep away blights. In Autumn they are dug out if in ridges, and if they are in drills they are ploughed out and then picked up by the children. Then they are put into pits. Straw and earth are put on the top of them to prevent the frost from harming them. The varieties most common here are Irish Queens,(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
