- 225Buying and SellingIn Kilmessan district shops were few in olden times as snuff tobacco and tea came into use shops started to sell these articles. These went by the name of "huxter shops". Until the Sunday closing bill passed into law public houses were open on Sundays. The favourite drink was a "dandy" of punch. In many cases even still to a lesser extent a labourer received grass of a cow, calves, hay, milk, potatoes meal etc as part wages. In buying and selling "boot" was part payment in money with an animal of lesser value for another. A luck penny varying from 1% to 26% was given to buyers.Where a labourer or employer couldn't read or write or where goods were sold, accounts were kept on a "tally".
