   Preparation

   My father plants an acre of potatoes every year. He prepares the ground by harrowing it to break the lumps of clay. The horse is then harnessed into the roller to level the ground. The drills are opened by a plough which is drawn by two horses. The plough has a point that runs into the ground, the clay falls back and a drill is made.

   Preparation of potatoes for sowing

   My mother cuts the potatoes in two. She cuts them where a sprout is growing and when they are planted Many potatoes form from one sprout. The manure from the yard is drawn to the field in carts and it is left in heaps on the furrows ready to be spread along them.
