- In ordinary houses a large pot of potatoes were boiled for dinner.
They were steamed out on a large basket which was put resting on the pot.
The family sat round the basket and ate the potatoes with cabbage and bacon cut small for convenience as knives and forks were scarce. Bread.
Wheaten bread and Boxty baked in a pan with plenty of fat.Tea.
Tea was an expensive luxury and was only used at Xmas and Easter.
At first people did not know how to prepare it. They boiled it strained off the water and ate the leaves with butter.
Cups and saucers were very large. Mrs Reilly has some very ancient ones. They were produced at a "Station" i.e. when the priest visited the house to say mass. They still call them the Priest's cups
