- The local fairs were always held in towns. Buyers often transacted their business at farmer's houses or at cross-roads. Fairs were held at Skryne and Bective long ago. Fairs were held in Skryne on St Patrick's Day, on the 20th. June and on the 12th October. The fairs on the 17th March and on the 20th June were cattle-fairs and the fair on the 12th Oct. was a horse, sheep, and cattle fair. The cattle fair was held at the Priest's Cross and the horse fair on the top of the "hill of Skryne". The fair at Bective was held in a field in the village, on the 16th May and on the 1st November. Cattle and sheep were sold at both fairs. "Ribbon men" visited the fair. These were a party. The party was divided into two parties. One called the "bees" and the other the "Bilby Smyth's". If they had any ill-feeling against one another in the parties(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
