Another interesting idea was discussed in the school this week also. Why is "Yellow Furze" ( Aiteann Buidhe ) so called?
One girl states she heard it from a learned and very old neighbour now dead that it came about in this way:- In the Penal Days the little church where the people of the parish met to worship God, was situated in Smythstown, and was amost hidden in the dense growth of Furze bushes, which surrounded it and which were allowed to grow so as to hide the small church, so as to save it from destruction.
Later on "the Chapel" , as it was called, was transferred to a small building in Hayestown, and after that to its present place of location here beside the school, but it still was "Yellow Furze chapel" although the unprofitably gay shrub is and was conspicuous by its entire absence in the spot.
