“Painestown and Dollardstown both derive their names from families...”
Painstown and Dollardstown both derive their names from families - Paynestown (as it used to be spelled) got its name from the Payne Family, and the Dollards gave their name to the other place.
Our own school is in the Yellow Furze which place got its name in this way.
The old parish church of Yellow Furze was in Hayes (opposite the present one) and around it grew great clumps of Furze which often hid priests from the British "red-coats".
These bushes still remain, and burn or cut as people may, they still grow stronger and healthier than ever.
In Ardmulchan another old parish church now a burial ground, there is a bishop of our diocese buried.
In years gone by some men digging a grave there found a chalice and some alter ornaments, supposed to have been buried in Penal days.
The chime of bells here were thrown into the river either by priest hunters or by the monks themselves who wished to hide them until happier days.
