  1. In ancient times the people made their own candles. They were made of rushes and were called rushlights. First of all they peeled the rushes very carefully so that they would not break the pith. Then they steeped them in melted fat or grease. After that they put them in large candlesticks with an iron top on them. At night the people always knocked the candle. People would get up from bed to knock it if they forgot to do it when they were going to bed for there was some tradition about it.
