- In Stackallen, Navan, Co. Meath there lives a man (R. Rochford) who is a malt shovel maker. He claims to be the only one of his trade in Ireland at the present time. He gets orders from the biggest breweries and distilleries in Ireland.
These shovels are very large and are made entirely of wood. Beech wood is mostly used. The trunks are sawn into planks of the right thickness in a saw mill. Then the shovel maker shapes the planks with special tools for the purpose.
Formerly many families of Rochfords lived in Stackallen and all were engaged in malt shovel making.- Bailitheoir
