  1. The study of place names and how places got their names is a very interesting subject.
    Flay Lane is so called because during the Penal days priests used to be murdered there. Scarlet St. is called so because during the Cromwellian invasion on the town of Drogheda this street was scarlet with the blood of the people. Johns Gate is also called Butter Gate because long, long ago the farmers coming in to Drogheda had to pay toll of a piece of butter each to the monks of St. Johns Abbey.
