  1. The ruins of monasteries which are still seen in this area are at Slane, Mellifont, and Monasterboice.
    It is said that in the Slane monastery the monks slept standing, and the stone blocks on which they laid their arms cam still be seen.
    It is also said that Monasterboice tower was built by a lady one night and that at early morn a shepherd saw her, and she immediately vanished, and that her footprints can be seen on a nearby stone.
    On his way from Dublin, Hugh O'Neill stayed at Mellifont for the night.
