On Shrove Tuesday, pancakes, are made, and "pancake siv" is given, by blackened faces on that night. Butter would not be made on Good Friday because when salting it, it would have to be tasted, and this was considered a very great sin. On Easter Saturday, holy water is blessed and people take a bottle of it home with them. On Easter Sunday bon-fires are lighted and tea parties are held out in the open. On St John's and St Peter and Paul's eve, bonfires are lighted.
If it rains on St, Swithen's Day it is believed that it will continue raining for forty days and nights.
