  1. Before the English came into Ireland in nearly every district there were Irish families ruling.
    The district round Castlebellingham was ruled by the Garlands, who lived in a house in Castlebellingham where McBrides are living now.
    At that time people called them Gernons, which was their right name, because there is a hill down along the sea and it is called Gernon's Hill.
