The houses long ago were mostly thatched.
There were very few of them slated.
In some of the houses long ago the kitchen was slated and the remaining parts of the house were thatched. Some houses were built in bogs and they were called bog cabins.
Some of the houses long ago were thatched with rushes.
The thatch was got from the straw the people had and the slates were got in the slate quarry.
The fire places were always along the gable wall. There is no account of the fire place being in the corner.
There used to be iron bars on the windows to keep out robbers.
Turf coal and wood were used for fire long ago and they are still used. The turf was got in the bogs.
